Even though we’re in the month of May, we can always use a little bit of Christmas spirit. The Birthday Party, Nick Cave’s pre–Bad Seeds band, gave us a song that we can sing anytime of year.

There was this dude named Joe. Well, he’s dead, totally mangled in a car wreck. It’s such a bloody mess and the bodies are so torn apart you can’t even tell the girls from the boys.

It’s Christmastime, Joe. Speak to Nick.

“Dead Joe” in July 1982:

There’s just an unrelenting fury with “Dead Joe” that always hits me in the gut. Especially the tempo and Rowland S. Howard’s brilliant guitar accompaniment.

“Dead Joe” in 1982:

Oh, to have been lucky enough to have lived during that era of The Birthday Party. Notice how Nick gets right into the crowd. He was about 25 years old at the time. Over 30 years later, he still engages fully with the crowd.

From here, let’s go ahead and fast forward to Grinderman performing at Coachella. One of the reasons I won’t be caught dead at these festivals is because of idiot ladies on their lunkhead boyfriends’ shoulders. Oh, the sense of entitlement is sad.

But the way Nick handles her, it makes me laugh every time. Of course the whole song is great, but if you’re pressed for time, fast forward to the 5-minute mark, where we start to see her arms in the air flinging around above the crowd.

“Kitchenette” at Coachella:

Who is this funny old man? she thinks to herself…while Nick politely grabs her hand. And I love how she tries to pull it back. Wait, oh, this dude is kind of scaring me, and if I pretend I’m on drugs maybe he’ll stop focusing on me.

By the 7-minute mark, she’s off the shoulders, after he lures her again to hold his hand and screams, “TIPPY TOE TIPPY TOE.”

“Yeah hippy, I’m Nick Cave, and 10 years before you were even sperm I have been doing this.”

Back to “Dead Joe.”

Check this out from 1992:

Oh, ho, uh, what?

…

…

We are proud to have a major following in Poland. Thank you for your continued support. Here’s Nick Cave performing “Dead Joe” with Polish subtitles so you can fully indulge in the experience:

I can picture the conversation in which Nick suggests that The Bad Seeds perform the song during one of their sets.

There is a lesson to be learned. If you happen to be in a car with a man named Joe and it’s anywhere near Christmastime, politely ask to get out of the car.

“I can walk from here.”

“But, it’s five more miles—and snowing.”

“I’m a Bad Seeder, and I know what happens next.”

“Ho-oh-oh-OH-oh-oh, oh oh oh oh oh oh/ De-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-ead Joe.“

Thanks for reading, and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #14: “Wild World”

Nick Cave Monday #3: “Shivers” To “Junkyard”

Nick Cave Monday #22: “Jubilee Street”

Nick Cave Monday #10: “The Carny”

Nick Cave Monday #32: “West Country Girl”

What do you do when you think a girl is hot and you really want to get with her? You write her a song.

Nick Cave did that for PJ Harvey and “West Country Girl” was released on “The Boatman’s Call” in 1997.

Thus kindled the romance between Nick and Polly.

Let this be a lesson, if it can work for Nick, it just might work for you.

Here are The Bad Seeds performing “West Country Girl” for MTV when the song came out:

And they lived happily ever after. Well, not exactly.

Let’s listen to Nick’s introduction to the song in the clip below:

Someone he once found attractive. Ouch.

Did you notice the lyrics have changed?

From the original song he held in his hand “her Spanish Fly and monkey gland.” In later live versions the line is changed….”I held in her hand, her hippy mom and her sad old man.”

In the interview below, Nick discusses the personal songwriting that happened with “The Boatman’s Call.”

Mick Harvey dropping’ the knowledge. I should have talked to him before I got the acknowledgements together on my first book. When I told my girlfriend at the time that I was going to include her in the acknowledgements she was so flattered. When she saw that she wasn’t first in the acknowledgements and given a special sentence like my friends who really helped me for years….that lead to days of weeping and crying and now she’s first in the acknowledgements. I should have talked to Mick and learned from “West Country Girl.”

I learned my lesson and won’t make that mistake again. But, check out how glorious it has turned out for Nick now that he has Susie as his wife. She’s on his latest album cover, naked and lovely, and he writes all of his songs for her.

Amen Nick, you finally found your lady and we raise a glass to you.

Segue, back to “West Country Girl.” The video here is a little rough, but it’s a brilliant performance where Nick practically strangles the piano and spews with rage as he sings a love song for a lady that he once had the hots for:

Let’s travel to Poland. Nick Cave Monday is huge in Poland so we like to find videos that include Polish subtitles when we can:

Ah, it’s such a great song, even though it may have a history of hurt for Nick. Let’s indulge in our mistakes and keep art alive. Nick includes the song in his setlist in 2009 when he was already very happily married to Susie. Video is a little rough, but the sound is decent:

And, a little sweet extra credit…another song we’ll feature in a later edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Our lesson today was how to woo a woman, Bad Seeder style. It may go wrong, but at least beautiful art can be extracted from love and heartbreak.

“Into my human heart and filled me/
With love up to the brim and killed me/
And rebuilt me back anew/
With something to look forward to…”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #27: “Tupelo”

Nick Cave Monday #3: “Shivers” To “Junkyard”

Nick Cave Monday #36: “Dead Joe”

Nick Cave Monday #31: “Deanna”

Nick Cave Monday #26: “Brother, My Cup is Empty”

Deanna was a girl from Melbourne, Australia. She meant so much to Nick she got her own song on the 1988 album, “Tender Prey.” If you have ever seen The Bad Seeds live in the last 25 years there is a very good chance “Deanna” was on the set list.

The Bad Seeds even performed it last week in San Francisco. It was spectacular.

Here’s the original video:

The video was shot by Mick Harvey on 8mm film.

- Up against the white wall guys. Now start lip syncing.

When Grinderman performed at two small venues in San Francisco in 2007, the audience was filled Bad Seeders and rock stars like Henry Rollins. Rollins was in Lebanon for some reason, flew all the way back to California to see Nick’s new project, then went back to Lebanon afterwards. Nick and Henry have history together. Even though the video below is a little spotty, Nick invited Henry and Jello Biafra for the “Deanna” encore at Slim’s in San Francisco.

Jello didn’t know the song, naughty man, so Henry had to give him a quick primer, “Just keep singing Deanna,” he said. I believe. I have been looking for the Henry Rollins video as he tells it…it used to be on the ‘net, now I can’t find it.

“Deanna” live and pretty:

That was 2008, here’s 1998 in Russia:

Nick is a master at balance. Watch his live sets and you’ll see him balance on monitors, on barriers, on people’s heads…..I swear he is a secret tai chi master.

Oh, but this one time:

“Deanna” in 1990:

There is a killer acoustic version of “Deanna” here:

In that version, Nick kicks in his gospel influence by adding a couple of lines from “Oh Happy Day”:

I had to grab the Elvis Presley version, though the song dates further back than that. And, what’s up with the cast from The Sopranos in the crowd?

Last Tuesday, Nick performed at Civic Center in San Francisco. Earlier he dedicated “Wide Lovely Eyes” to his wife and after they played “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry” Nick said, “This song is about a girl.”

“Is it your wife?” someone yelled from the crowd.

“She may as well have been.”

Sad to say, but I don’t think the San Francisco crowd was contributing as they should: flipping out, writhing every second at the Church of Nick and reaching out for a chance to touch the fitted suit of Our Lord of The Bad Seeds.

Or there were issues with the venue or sound since I shouldn’t make such a hasty decision regarding SF Bad Seeders…..still, where John Hell and I were in the crowd we danced our asses off. Unfortunately most people around us had their arms folded and were slightly nodding their heads. (Trespassers, not Bad Seeders.)

On the set list was “Into My Arms” (the greatest love song ever) and they skipped it and performed “The Weeping Song.” Then they skipped three songs for a second encore that were ready to go. My man Patrick McCracken showed me the set list and other songs we missed, “God is in the House”, “People Ain’t No Good”, and the one that rips at my heart that could have been: “Stranger Than Kindness.”

I wept outside when I saw the set list. No, it was more like I got something in my eye, then it watered.

Grinderman announced their breakup about a year ago. But guess what Bad Seeders? Grinderman is performing two sets at Coachella in the coming days.

Let’s revisit the first single from Grinderman 2, “Heathen Child.” At the core of this humorous song is a message…In the end, we are all alone on this giant explosion that we inhabit called Earth.

Here comes the apocalypse, from our Gladiator gods, Grinderman:

Did you ever think there would be a day where Nick would be filmed lighting one of his farts and setting off a bomb? Nick didn’t either. Check out this fun interview with the guys.

Amen, Grinderman is a GREAT idea guys. I crack up at the restrainst on Nick for Grinderman, that he can’t sing about God or love. Restrictions open up amazing doors. Here’s part two of the interview.

Thank you John Hillcoat for pushing the boundaries and making Nick have an explosive fart.

Now let’s check out some brilliant live versions. First, their appearance on Jools Holland:

“You think your great big husband will protect you – You Are Wrong,
You think your little wife will protect you – You Are Wrong
You think your children will protect you – You Are Wrong
You think your government will protect you – You Are Wrong…”

Exit Festival in 2011:

Again, Nick says bullshit to those awful festival barriers and gets right into the crowd. Remember, if he comes your way, grab him and don’t let go. Shit, let him stand on your damn head if he needs to. Do your part as a Bad Seeder and help with the magic.

I thought I was in Los Angeles on Tuesday, but it turns out I’m in San Francisco. If you would like to bring me as your date to The Bad Seeds show, I am well behaved and a fan of pre-show tea near the Zen Center a few blocks away from the venue. Message me with a photo, why I should feel safe with you and let’s go shake our asses to Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.

(If you have a tattoo of Nick’s face or signature on your body, please, don’t get in touch….and stop doing such silly things.)

“Sweet little momo says: I’m scared and lonely.”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #22: “Jubilee Street”

Nick Cave Monday #36: “Dead Joe”

Nick Cave Monday #31: “Deanna”

Nick Cave Monday #16: “Palaces Of Montezuma”

Nick Cave Monday #7: “No Pussy Blues”

It was a dark and stormy night in April 1936. The city of Tupelo, Mississippi was ravaged by a tornado that killed more than 230 people. It is ranked as the fourth deadliest tornado in U.S. history.

Tupelo is also the birthplace of Elvis Presley. But the real reason we’re here is because “Tupelo” is one of the defining songs of The Bad Seeds….a song that tends to make it frequently into their live sets.

My fellow Bad Seeders, here is the original video from 1985:

“Tupelo” is the first track off “The Firstborn Is Dead.” On the B-side of the single version is a brilliant re-do of “The Six Strings That Drew Blood” originally released by The Birthday Party.

The Bad Seeds on the record are Barry Adamson, Blixa Bargeld and Mick Harvey.

I love the the “Looka, looka yonder” line in the song. A reference to Leadbelly’s song “Black Betty” which Nick Cave has also covered.

Of course, leave it to Nick to make a storm and the birth of Elvis Presley sound apocalyptic.

From the song:

“Well Saturday gives what Sunday steals,
And a child is born on his brother’s heals,
Come Sunday morn the first-born’s dead,
In a shoe-box tied with a ribbon of red.”

The firstborn who’s dead is Jesse Garon Presley, Elvis Presley’s twin brother. Jesse was stillborn and Elvis was delivered 35 minutes later.

It’s currently in their live set as they tour the world. Since Barry Adamson is back with The Bad Seeds, it’s really cool to have him perform songs he worked on years ago with the band.

Here’s a great live version from 1992:

It’s a good thing Gladys rocked baby Elvis to sleep and kept him safe from the brutal pounding of nature on their “clapboard shack with a roof of tin,” or we wouldn’t have “The King.”

Here’s a photo of the house Elvis was born in and what Nick was referencing.

Here are The Bad Seeds performing the song for the BBC in 2008:

“The Firstborn is Dead” has been referred to as the blues record. The Bad Seeds have a habit of trying to keep things fresh and not delivering what’s expected. I love their anti-formula of sorts.

“The public gets what they deserve, not what they demand, unless we all decide to be a business, not a band.” (“Breakdown” by Agent Orange.)

This wasn’t the first time a song was written about the tornado of Tupelo, John Lee Hooker recorded his own version. In the video below the title says it’s about the 1927 flood of Tupelo, but that has to be a mistake since the major one happened in 1936.

Here are The Bad Seeds performing the song in 2009:

Some have pointed out the line in the song, “Water water everywhere” is a reference to “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The video below is from their show in Mexico last month. The video isn’t too sharp, but the audio is decent.

In other news, The Bad Seeds are on world tour and as they perform I’ll try to keep up with video gems from recent shows.

Here they are in Brisbane on March 8th doing a killer version of “Stagger Lee”:

“O God help Tupelo, O God help Tupelo!”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #10: “The Carny”

Nick Cave Monday #24: “Mack The Knife”

Nick Cave Monday #23: “Hard On For Love”

Nick Cave Monday #14: “Wild World”

Nick Cave Monday #9: “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”

When the the relationship is over, when your heart is cracked open and leaking blood on your pinstripe suit, when you’re out of cash and you need something to numb the pain of a break up, tell that wretched dude at the bar to buy you a drink.

“Brother, My Cup is Empty” is the fourth track from the album “Henry’s Dream” released in 1992.

It takes two to make a breakup happen so Nick admits:

“I cannot blame it all on her,
To blame her all would be a lie…”

But, he’s stilled pretty pissed at the lady:

“For many a nights I lay awake,
I wish that I could watch her die,
To see her accusing finger spurt,
To see flies swarm her hateful eye,
To watch her groaning in the dirt,
To see her clicking tongue crack dry.”

Nick has said he kills people in his songs so he doesn’t have to kill them in real life.

“Brother, My Cup is Empty” performed in 1996:

Nick is one of the greatest lyricists and sometimes his songs aren’t so easily defined. Could his cup be his soul? We can get deep here.

Relationships don’t start out bad, they just sometimes take a wrong turn. Before Nick was the captain of his pain he was “sliding down on rainbows” and “swinging from the stars.”

I wonder if he wrote it for one lady and she knows it’s about her and can’t stand the song. Or if a few different ladies think it’s about them.

In other news, Thomas Wydler isn’t on The Bad Seeds world tour because he is sick. I haven’t heard anything specific, but Nick has said that it’s not life threatening, just enough to keep him from touring right now.

Thomas we hope you get well soon.

“My friend, my only brother, do not let the party grieve,
throw a dollar on the bar, now kiss my ass and leave.”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #9: “Papa Won’t Leave You, Henry”

Nick Cave Monday #31: “Deanna”

Nick Cave Monday #27: “Tupelo”

Nick Cave Monday #25: “Abattoir Blues”

Nick Cave Monday #24: “Mack The Knife”

Sometimes things get murky in our brains. The depression takes hold. It’s more than melancholy, it’s to the point of absolute despair.

“Abattoir Blues” is the title track on the double album released with “Lyre of Orpheus” by The Bad Seeds in 2004. With their intent on keeping things fresh for every new release, the band brought in the London Gospel Community Choir. Not only for the recording, but also for the world tour.

If Nick was playing the role of a preacher on earlier records, he took it to a whole new height here. Members of the choir didn’t know who Nick Cave was and received their education fast. They were also Christians, so they needed to be okay with the songs. (More on that in a few months when we get to “Hidin’ All The Way.”)

Why is it when Nick calls upon outside people to help him out they don’t know who he is? Us fans would die for a chance to perform as part of The Bad Seeds. It makes me depressed. It gives me the “Abattoir Blues.”

Only Nick Cave could make a Starbucks drink sound sinister and violent. Is Frappucino a metaphor? Is he giving a dig to our global world of Starbucks in almost every city, partially responsible for turning the world’s metropolises into generic strip malls? That bums me out too.

Nick calls out to his lady for some understanding and comfort.

Can she sees what he sees? “Mass extinction darling, hypocrisy, these things are not good for me.”

An abattoir is literally defined as a slaughterhouse…where they kill the animals for meat. It’s from the French the word abattre, which means to strike down. Abattoir is also used to imply something is as devastating as entering a slaughterhouse to be killed with the rest of the animals.

Later he wants a way out with his lady. “Can we leave this place now dear? Is there someway out of here?”

Ah, but life goes moves forward here on this planet and we have to plug away as humans. One of the oddly inspirational lyrics from Nick Cave for me comes in the last verse of the song:

“I awake with the sparrows and hurry off to work/
the need for validation, babe, gone completely berserk/
I wanna be your superman but I turned out such a jerk/
I got the Abattoir Blues….”

The creative life is a topsy-turvy existence and we can’t avert our eyes to the crap going around us…we just have to get back to work. Sometimes that takes its toll on our relationships, and sometimes we’re lucky enough to find a woman who understands.

That’s part of my abattoir blues. Your abattoir blues mileage may vary.

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #27: “Tupelo”

Nick Cave Monday #26: “Brother, My Cup is Empty”

Nick Cave Monday #24: “Mack The Knife”

Nick Cave Monday #23: “Hard On For Love”

Nick Cave Monday #21: “Nature Boy”

One night in January 1995, you may have been alive and lucky enough to have tuned your TV to “Great Performances” a special featuring the music of Kurt Weill.

It was the coolest of the cool performing Kurt’s music including Elvis Costello, William S. Burroughs and our man Nick Cave.

Here he is performing “Mack the Knife.”

The lyrics could have been written by Nick himself and we wouldn’t have even guessed the song was written almost a century ago. Weill wrote the music, with his lovely haunting circus orchestrations. The lyrics were originally in German by Bertolt Brecht and it was part of “The Threepenny Opera.”

The song is also known as “The Ballad of Mack the Knife” and “Die Moritat von Mackie Messier.”

After Nick’s groovy opening credits sequence there are other major stars of music on the show.

Here is the sexy Polly Jean performing “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife.”

Let’s also check out David Johansen from New York Dolls, absolutely killin’ it with “Alabama Song.”

In other Nick Cave news, did you catch the Los Angeles show online Feb. 21st? They kept it online for one day. To watch them perform the whole release of “Push the Sky Away” was absolutely brilliant. That album seems like a forty-two minute song with a few breaks. When I’m listening with my ear buds, I tend to take longer walks and let a couple of buses pass so I can take in the full release on every playback. It’s so good!

And to see Barry Adamson as a Bad Seed again. Perfection!

Coming soon is an interview with Agent OO666. (Barry Adamson song reference, stay tuned for more in April.)

Here we go. It’s 2013, the year of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds touring the world. Check in from your cities and countries on stories regarding the gigs. I wanna hear about every hip swivel and set list.

“See the shark, with teeth like razors, and he wears them, in his face, and Mack he has got a knife, but not in such an obvious place….” Danke Kurt Weill and Nick.

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #27: “Tupelo”

Nick Cave Monday #20: “Henry Lee”

Nick Cave Monday #17: “The Curse of Millhaven”

Nick Cave Monday #14: “Wild World”

Nick Cave Monday #26: “Brother, My Cup is Empty”

It was 1994. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds were performing The Fillmore in San Francisco. I was crushed against the stage and Blixa Bargeld strummed his guitar in front of me. Midway through The Bad Seeds set I summoned the courage to yell, “Play Hard On For Love.”

“What?!” Nick walked towards me, pointing his finger. Like God striking me with leprosy for blaspheming his name. Nick glared into my eyes and I was on the spot. He actually listened and I was conversing with THE Nick Cave.

“Play Hard On For Love,” I said with more of a squeak.

“We have our set taken care of, thank you,” He replied.

Nick and I actually spoke to each other. I was so scared of him as a young worshiper. Nick Cave was God.

The song wasn’t performed live by The Bad Seeds until their 2008 tour.

Their live version had more ferocity than the recorded version on “Your Funeral, My Trial.”

The 1986 recording was a prophecy for what Nick Cave would become in future years, especially after 2007.

Nick has embraced his inner perv, the animal he is as a man….at least through his lyrics and his novel “The Death of Bunny Munro” which was about a pervy, degenerate bloke. In the hands of Nick, sex crazed literary brilliance.

Hard On For Love could have been included on the first Grinderman record in 2007 and it would have been just as fresh as “No Pussy Blues.”

The first Grinderman release had an obvious influence on the next Bad Seeds record “Dig, Lazarus, Dig” and it made sense to add Hard On For Love to their set for the live tour of the record. The song even included a lyric about Lazarus, “Coming at her like Lazarus from above.”

A song I thought I would never hear live and if it wasn’t for Grinderman, there’s a chance we wouldn’t have heard a live version of the song.

Here’s the studio version of the song:

I adore how Nick takes Psalms 23 and flips it into lyrical pornography.

The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want
The Lord is my shepherd and I shall not want
But he leadeth me like a lamb to the lips
Out of the valley of the shadow of death
I am his rod and his staff
I am his scepter and shaft
And she is heaven and hell
At whose gates I ain’t been delivered
I’m going to give those gates a shove.

Psalms 23 is now a biblical chapter of horny innuendo, rewritten by Nick, who should have his lyrics included in a future bible cannon.

Maven did a cover of Hard On For Love featuring Marilyn Manson on vocals:

Well, Marilyn Manson gave it a go and picked a great song, but he may want to stick to covering acts like The Eurythmics.

When I interviewed Nick before their gig in San Francisco in 2008, I told him about our 1994 encounter.

“What did I say?” he asked.

“You said our set was taken care of.”

He laughed. “We probably didn’t know how to play the song. We’re playing it in our set now, a very aggressive version of the song.”

Nick Almighty is sweet and gracious and funny in person.

Other magical lyrics from the song:

“My aim is to hit this miss.” – “I am the fiend hid in her skirts and it’s as hot as hell in here.”

And the repeated chant, “Rise and fall her breasts, rise and fall her breasts….”

After our interview in 2008, at the Warfield theater I was at the front of the stage and about an hour into their set, Nick pointed at me and said, “This song’s for you.”

I wasn’t sure if it was really happening, I pointed at myself, “Me?”

“Yeah, you with the beard and hat.”

My friends all in the front row knew me and were excited and yelled to Nick, “His name is Tony, his name is Tony.”

Nick looked at them confused, like – leave us alone, we’re connecting here – then he went into the song. My friends didn’t know I interviewed Nick earlier that day.

It only took 14 years, but Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds finally performed my request from when I was a kid. For extra credit, he dedicated the song to me.

“It is for she that the cherry bleeds…”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #27: “Tupelo”

Nick Cave Monday #10: “The Carny”

Nick Cave Monday #26: “Brother, My Cup is Empty”

Nick Cave Monday #25: “Abattoir Blues”

Nick Cave Monday #24: “Mack The Knife”

Goth girls everywhere will soon breathe a collective sigh of relief causing a variance in the Earth’s orbit.

We have been waiting since 2008 for a new Bad Seeds record and we are so very close. “Push The Sky Away”, the 15th release by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds is available next week.

To celebrate our countdown until February 19th let’s watch the video for “Jubilee Street.” This version of the video shows boobs and ass. There is a censored, safe for work version, but who wants that?

It’s directed by John Hillcoat and stars Ray Winstone. Indulge:

I lose my breath when Ray Winstone drops to the prostitute’s feet, like a rabid beast devouring her soul through her toes. It’s sexy, pervy, dirty and a bit shameful and shameless all at the same time.

Leave it to The Bad Seeds to stab our hearts and director John Hillcoat to bitch slap the tears streaming down our faces.

For those lucky enough, Nick is doing a few dates at intimate venues in February. His home town of Brighton was one of those gigs.

“Jubilee” live in Brighton:

I must confess, the first time I listened to “Push The Sky Away” I didn’t really like it. Then, it grew on me, it rubbed me softly on my inner thigh. It’s really good.

Mark Mordue does a great write up of the record. Check it out.

The live shows have started and when Nick and the crew are at Coachella in April there are two Bad Seeds performances and two Grinderman performances.

Grinderman “broke up” last year but Coachella dishes out the big money to get bands to reunite. Hey, I’ll become a Jehovah’s Witness again for a weekend if Coachella drops a cool million on me. Can I offer you a Watchtower and chance to live forever in paradise?

“I believe in God / I believe in mermaids too,
I believe in 72 virgins on a chain / Why not, Why not,
I believe in the rapture / for I’ve seen your face,
On the floor of the ocean / at the bottom of the ray.”

Love Nick and his lyrics. That is from “Mermaids” off of the new release. Earlier in the song is this line:

“I was the match that would fire up her snatch.”

Yep. So poetic and raunchy.

But Nick, U No U had me at “I wanna tell you about a girl….”

Thanks for reading and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

Related Posts:

Nick Cave Monday #30: “Heathen Child”

Nick Cave Monday #36: “Dead Joe”

Nick Cave Monday #31: “Deanna”

Nick Cave Monday #16: “Palaces Of Montezuma”

Nick Cave Monday #12: “Kitchenette”
