Things to Do In DC When You’re at AWP

Update: I’m bumping this to the top because I don’t want to lose the good suggestions in the comments. Add your own suggestions down there.

Thing 1: Come find The Rumpus table at the Book Fair.

We’ll have all sorts of swag, from calendars to Write Like a MotherFucker coffee mugs and tee-shirts to just about everything in the Rumpus Shop. I’ll be there personally as well, selling and signing copies of my new book, A Witness in Exile.

The Cave Canem Fellows reading, Wednesday February 2 from 7:00-10:00 at the Charles Sumner School. The event is to raise money for Cave Canem, and there’s a suggested $10 donation at the door. 20 Cave Canem fellows are scheduled to read. More information here.

Other things to do: The 3-Dollar Bill Reading Thursday, February 3, from 7:30-10:30 pm at the Human Rights Campaign Equality Forum (1640 Rhode Island Avenue NW, in Washington, DC). “3 Dollar Bill” is sponsored by Arktoi Books, BLOOM Literary Journal, Human Rights Campaign, Knockout Literary Magazine, The Lambda Literary Foundation, A Midsummer Night’s Press, The Publishing Triangle, Sibling Rivalry Press/Assarcus Journal, Sinister Wisdom Literary Journal, White Crane Institute, and The Writer’s Center.

VIDA is throwing a party on Thursday February 3 as well, from 9:00-midnight, featuring male writers reading work by women writers they admire. Readers include our very own Stephen Elliott and Seth Fischer. $10 donation at the door to help support VIDA’s work.

Literature Party to benefit 826DC on Friday February 4 at 9:30 p.m. also at the Black Cat. Ticket information is available at the link.

Graywolf Press authors Kim Kupperman and Nick Lantz will be reading at Teaism on Friday February 4 at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by Chapters Literary Arts Center.

Our own Andrew Altschul will be reading at The Counterpoint Showcase, Saturday February 5, 1:30pm in the Virginia B room at the Marriott Wardman Park.

So what else is happening? Leave your events or suggestions in the comments section.

  1. I’ll be at the VIDA event for sure and The Rumpus table. And I’ll be signing books (My Ruby Slippers: The Road Back to Kansas) at the Nebraska Press booth on Friday, Feb 4, 3-3:30. Look for the red balloons.

Bunch of us from The Velvet (http://www.welcometothevelvet.com), The Cult (http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net) and my press Otherworld Publications (http://www.otherworldpublications.com) will be reading at The Velvet Lounge (915 U Street NW) on Thursday night from 7-9. 8. Richard can’t make it, but we’re still going for it. How can we pass up the opportunity to present “Live Nude Words”? We’ll be at the Velvet Lounge on Thursday: http://www.badbadbad.net/Page1.html#livenudewords

  9. Edit: Things we could have done at AWP if we weren’t snowed-in in Iowa City with our flight canceled and the next available flight at midnight Thursday. Sigh…
