This week in San Francisco, Shakespeare gets shaken up a bit for “The Boar’s Head“, grab your skates for a Furry Skate Disco Party and the Portuguese Artists Colony gets Vertigo.
Monday, May 16th – Theater Pub presents “The Boar’s Head“ – local writer Stuart Bousel has woven a new cloth from a classic tale – Shakespeare’s Henrys IV & V. Free theater + booze. Best first date/second date/30th date ever? Cafe Royale, 8pm. Always free, but get there early to grab a good seat! Opening night!
Tuesday, May 17th – Chicken John hosts “Consult the Oracle: The Ask Dr. Hal Show” – an entirely improvisational performance based entirely on the “curiosity of the audience”. Attempt to stump Dr. Hal with all your secret scientific ponderings. Tonight is the Opening Show so expect a spectacle. 8pm, $10 – no one turned away for being broke. Aw.
Wednesday, May 18th – Academy of Sciences is FREE today! Woot!
Thursday, May 19th – SF Weekly celebrates their “Best of San Francisco” nominations – featuring music by The Peelers and DJ ZAQ, this bash at Ruby Sky promises to have dancing, drinks and, best of all, drunk writers. $10 tickets go to benefit the Masterminds Artist Grant Program, 9pm.
Friday, May 20th – Are you into skate night? Are you into fur? Are you into Burning Man? Oh boy! Your Friday just got really fun. Black Rock Roller Disco Burning Man theme camp is hosting “It’s a Fur Party – Roller Disco Style!” at CellSpace. Admission $10, skate rentals $5, 8pm.
Saturday, May 21st – Not specifically in SF, but a very SF activity, the Maker Faire returns to the Bay Area with all the steampunk, science, welding, crafts, home-made instruments and any other DIY concoctions you could ever dream of. Tickets are $5-$25, San Mateo County Event Center. Tickets. Oh yeah, also this guy says today is the end of the world…The American Atheists organization is throwing a party to celebrate how full of *crock* he is. So, craft, party or pray, depending on your preferences.
Sunday, May 22nd – **Two really mind-soothing, soul-cleansing and heart-filling events for you to end your week on. Why two? Cuz I love you a little bit.
1. Fivepoints Arthouse hosts the Portuguese Artists Colony for this month’s reading extravaganza entitled, “Vertigo“. With a full bill of exceptional writers including Sherril Jaffe, Maisha Z. Johnson and Anna Pulley not to mention musical guest, Quinn Deveaux and a live writing competition, this early evening is not be missed. Get there at 4:30pm to join the fun and hear Ms. Pulley’s “How Lesbian Sex Works – Haiku” series with gems such as: “Strap-on sex is fun // Until you realize you // Don’t know when to stop.”
2. Slow Motion Cowboys (recent Monthly Rumpus musical guest!) headlines at Cafe du Nord with The Human Condition and Pocket Full of Rye. Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm. $10 gets you in for a night of crooning, whooping, hollering and melodies that’ll keep you dancing in your head all week. RSVP!
