The Real Lesbians of Damascus

No, it’s not a new “reality” show airing network tv this fall (though we shouldn’t give anyone any ideas). It’s the subject of a piece by Daniel Nassar in today’s Guardian, and it’s really worth reading in its entirety. He walks us through the real struggles that the lesbian community has to deal with in Syria, from family estrangement to the threat of prison, and makes clear just how wrong MacMaster was in his details and how dangerous a game he was playing with other peoples’ lives. Go read the whole thing.

Also, I’ll be on Talk of the Nation with Neal Conan this afternoon to talk about the piece I wrote for The Rumpus on male privilege. I’m the closing bit of the second hour, scheduled to go from 3:40 – 4:00 p.m. EST. I’ll try my best to not make an ass of myself.

Brian, I was so impressed with your interview on NPR today – proud, even, of your thoughtful and careful (full of care/caring) response to these incidents.

After listening to all we could to the absolutely mindless, UN-thoughtful, UN-caring and UN-careful if not downright dangerous blather at Monday’s debate and in its aftermath (and despairing that we will be bombarded with it for the next 17 months), it was downright heartening to hear your intelligent and compassionate argument today. WORDS MEAN THINGS. Actions do too. You made that refreshingly clear.

Thank you. As Tim and Eric would say: Great job!

  2. I just listened to your interview on the Talk of the Nation podcast on NPR’s website — again, well done. And yes, you managed not to make an ass of yourself. 🙂
