A recent article in Sunday’s NY Times Book Review breaks down reading habits by gender, reporting that boys read less than girls. This revelation may be surprising given the plethora of YA fiction out there—one of the only booming genre of books out there right now.
However, this is where the gender dichotomy breaks down even further. Boys are apparently less willing to part from their nonfiction tendencies. This combined with the fact that most schools are less interested in contemporary fiction, there is a purpoted lack of male role models in the world of literacy and the YA genre is more inclined to capitalize on their female readership. There are many theories, but regardless, how do we correct this imbalance?
