This week in San Francisco-Litquake 2011 takes the town with 500 authors at over 100 events. Check the website for a full calendar, and read on for some highlights.
Monday 10/10: San Francisco’s premier storytelling series Porchlight hosts Are We Good? at Verdi Club. Readers Donnell Alexander, Rob Baedeker, Susan Freinkel, Jillian Lauren, Marc Maron, and Vanessa Veselkawalk us through stories of shame, apology, redemption, and outright begging for forgiveness. 8PM, $15.
Tuesday 10/11: Litquake and the Center for the Art of Translation host the Center’s regular Lit & Lunch series with acclaimed translator Joshua Beckman, reading from Micrograms by Ecuadorian poet Jorge Carrera Andrade and discussing the translation process. 12PM, FREE, 111 Minna Gallery. The Delancey Street Foundation hosts Re-Write: An evening of Prose from Writers in Recovery. “A collection of authors who have made it through the crucible of recovery with pen in hand, and are writing some of the best work of their careers.” 6PM, $8.
Wednesday 10/12: The RADAR reading series comes to the Luggage Store for performances inspired by “apocalyptic treats, romantic advice and literature.” 7PM FREE. In Berkeley, Deepak Chopra and physicist Leonard Mlodinow discuss their co-authored War of the Worldviews, a conversation on ‘the future of God’ that was originally debated by the authors at Caltech a few years ago. $15-30, First Congregational Church of Berkeley.
Thursday 10/13: Literary Death Match fenangles four authors from three continents into the ring for its annual Litquake appearance at Beatbox: “Literary Death Match invites you to a mind-blowing, earth-shaking, thesaurus-confounding battle of literary genius” hosted by Alia Volz and Todd Zuniga, and featuring a DJ set post-show. $10, 8PM
Friday 10/14: Litquake Women’s night features a “smorgasbord of mysteries, crime dramas, and even some mayhem-laced comedies” from eight superb female writers from in and out of the Bay Area. Litquake co-founder Jane Ganahl plays host at Bubble Lounge, 5:30PM $5-10 donation. Nordic Noir throws down with a lineup of authors from Norway and Sweden reading from their recent releases at the Swedish American Hall aka Cafe du Nord. Whether you’re a long time fan or looking for your intro to the genre outside Steig Larsson, you’ll love snuggling up to this dark and stormy night of crime fiction. 8PM, $10.
Saturday 10/15: Litquake primetime venue Z Space Theater hosts three discussion/workshops on the art of writing mysteries, short stories, and novels throughout the day. 1-4PM, $5. Top off the week with readings up and down Valencia’s lit corridor at Lit Crawl 2011, beginning at 6PM. Map out your night here-readings happen at bars, bookstores, boutiques, and outdoors, and come bearing snacks, laughs, tears, and drinks, so you will walk away from this with all senses sated, guaranteed.
Sunday 10/16: Litquake’s over. Go to Treasure Island.
