OSCAR THE GROUCH
★★★★★ (3 out of 5)
Hello, and welcome to my week-by-week review of everything in the world. Today I am reviewing Oscar the Grouch.
On the television show Sesame Street, there is a monster who lives in a garbage can and is pretty ornery. His name is Oscar the Grouch. When he was born he was just as grouchy as babies usually are, because being removed from the womb can put anyone in a bad mood. Unfortunately for Oscar, he never snapped out of it.
There’s no doubt the garbage can that he lives in is a subconscious attempt to return to his mother’s womb. It’s disturbing to consider what is going on inside his head that he thinks of his mother’s womb as a garbage can. He could have chosen any other number of places to live, like a papaya or bed of roses.
There’s a lot of garbage in the can along with Oscar too. In 1970 he sang a song called I Love Trash which includes the verse “I have here a sneaker that’s tattered and worn. It’s all full of holes and the laces are torn. A gift from my mother the day I was born. I love it because it’s trash.” I suspect that sneaker represents Oscar’s stillborn twin.
The more I think about it, the more it seems Oscar has some pretty good reasons to be a grouch. His mother was possibly so overcome with grief that she left the stillborn twin with Oscar in a crib. That would mess anyone up. If I met Oscar I would have to give him a hug. I’m sure he would pretend not to like it but I know deep down inside he would. I could even dress up as his long lost twin. It would be like his brother came back to life. I’ll bet that would bring a tear to his eye.
Please join me next week when I’ll be reviewing rice.
