Adjunct Faculty Plan Walk Out

Adjunct college faculty are at last taking a stand against abominable work conditions and low pay by planning a national walk out on February 25, 2015. Unlike their tenured counterparts, adjuncts lack protection from retributive firing should they follow through. Since 1975, the percent of adjunct faculty has risen from 21% of the workforce to almost 67% (as of 2009).

  1. At this point adjuncts comprise 75% of U.S. college faculty, and the number is growing. Many adjuncts are living on sub-poverty wages as student fees, tuition, and administrative salaries go up. It’s time to take a stand for higher ed.

  2. Thanks National Adjunct. You beat me to it – it’s at 75-80% currently. For those questioning the need for solidarity, consider my partner. She has 3 degrees, she works for 3 universities. She is paid 3 “contact hours” per class per week, even though just one of the universities requires that she maintain no less than 27 office hours per week – on her own time of course. She has no job security, no benefits of any kind, **NO** days off, no hope for advancement (the universities have no incentive to hire anything but adjuncts these days). She works between 80-100 hours a week, and earns less than $1/hour, all while under the burden of the student loans advanced degrees require. This passed criminal long ago.
