Newly promoted Restaurant Editor at Eater.com Nick Solares was dismissed after individuals called attention to his past as the skinhead frontman of NYC’s Youth Defense League, a hardcore band with a racist message.
Solares issued an apology for his contribution to the spread of racist ideas, but was dismissed regardless. Brooklyn Vegan compiled a series of flyers from the band’s days as fixtures of the CBGB scene (including plenty of shared bills with non-racist NYC hardcore bands such as Bold, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Sick of It All, Supertouch, Side by Side, and Warzone).
In his apology, Solares said:
I am deeply ashamed by this, and I made the decision decades ago to disassociate myself from far-right politics and fully disavow the bigoted and dehumanizing ideologies they represent.
However, there are reports that Solaris has stayed in touch with his old scene more than his apology suggests. Read more at Gawker.
