i feel as if i could write an intergenerational graphic novel. something something about how my father came to the u.s. and didn’t see his family for 9 years (2 for the green card, 5 for the citizenship test, 2 for the sponsorship—it would take much longer now, he says). something something about how my lover departed and can’t come back for 10 years (3-year ban if you overstay 180 days, 10-year ban if you overstay 1 year). something something about how i left my home and my gender, yet here I am still becoming my father. something something about how it sucks to be a historical subject. not the trauma that gets passed down, but the country that keeps happening.
