David Hajdu is the music critic for The New Republic and the author of four books of nonfiction criticism, including Lush Life and Positively 4th Street. He is a professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, and he is working now on a history of popular music in America. John Carey was the editorial cartoonist for Greater Media Newspapers in Central New Jersey from 2005 to 2013. An exhibiting painter since 1979, he has been the recipient of Pollock-Krasner and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation artist fellowships.

The Rumpus publishes original fiction, poetry, literary humor writing, comics, essays, book reviews, and interviews with authors and artists of all kinds. Our mostly volunteer-run magazine strives to be a platform for risk-taking voices and writing that might not find a home elsewhere. We lift up new voices alongside those of more established writers our readers may already know and love. We want to bring new perspectives into the conversation that will make us all look deeper.
