MONDAY 4/19: Teddy Wayne at McNally Jackson. The author will read from his new book Kapitoil. Wayne has received a 2010 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship and his work has appeared in The New Yorker, the New York Times, Vanity Fair, Time, Esquire, and elsewhere, perhaps most notably at McSweeney’s Internet Concern where he is a regular contributor of “unpopular proverbs.” 7:00pm.
TUESDAY 4/20: My First New York, Reading. In a cover feature last spring, New York Magazine invited 30 notable New Yorkers to share their memories (mostly fond, some harrowing) of arriving to town. Ecco/HarperCollins recently publish My First New York, a greatly expanded collection. Entries include stories by Tom Wolfe, Parker Posey, Lorne Michaels, Diane von Fursternberg and Chuck Close (See pictures of the launch party here and Read some excerpts here. Light Industry presents Videofreex. Light Industry presents a survey of work by seminal guerrilla television outfit Videofreex, featuring a number of newly restored tapes. Fiction Forum: Maile Chapman moderated by Ethan Nosowsky. Chapman’s stories have appeared in A Public Space, Literary Review, The Mississippi Review, and Post Road. THURSDAY 4/22: NOON Reading and Launch. NOON Annual is launching Issue #9. In celebrating it’s tenth anniversary (Issue One was “0”), editor Diane Williams will present a mix of NOON veterans and up-and-coming authors. Synesthesia 2010: This “artistic game of telephone across the genres” this year begins with the opening of a fortune cookie. Here’s how it works. A lyricist/songwriter team opened a fortune cookie and made a short piece based on the fortune inside. A sulptor watched their piece and made a sculpture, which was viewed by a choreographer, who sent her work on to an electric cellist, and so on. You get the idea. The whole 11-artist chain will be performed (in some cases viewed) for eight shows beginning today. The last link is a mixologist, by the way, and the audience is invited to partake. FRIDAY 4/23: Project Runway Opening Reception: A reincarnation of the Dutch collective formally known as Antistrot returns to 3rd Ward for a 2D-3D-Performance Mashup. Witness performance classics like the Batman Performance, the Pizza Performance, Ultra Eczema live, Yob Sick, and more. Feel the visceral 3D objects of Sander Reijgers (US premier), the crafty graphics of Johan Kleinjan, David Elshout and Paul Borchers. SATURDAY 4/24: Saturday Sessions. PopRally hosts a print-making event. New York artists will guide you as you silkscreen prints onto blank record sleeves. Printing will be provided by Forth Estate and there will be live music by Real Estate. This event is in conjunction with Christian Marclay’s installation “2822 Records.” P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center. 4:00pm – 7:00pm.
Bobby Previte performs his first solo show, “Solo Drums,” at The Stone, home to experimental and avant-garde music whose artistic director is John Zorn. I’ve seen Bobby perform with Knox Chandler of the Psychedelic Furs and on an upturned coffee can. His drum solos are exhilarating. This performance is not to be missed. 8:00pm.

ART: Joel Shapiro at Pace Gallery. Joel Shapiro’s new body of work comprises painted wood elements that are suspended in space from the walls, floor, and ceiling via string. Although the works utilize architecture, “they are not about flatness as a starting point,” according to the artist; rather, they are “the projection of thought into space without the constraint of architecture.”
