This week in San Francisco: The June Monthly Rumpus!, short operas, burlesque, underground film, and cardboard tube fighting!
Monday 6/14: It’s that time again: get your ass down to the Makeout Room for June’s Rumpus, Beautiful Beginnings! Co-hosted by SMITH Magazine, this month’s Rumpus features authors Richard Ferguson, Piper Kerman, Raina Bird, Lisa Brown, and the Six-Word Memoirist, comedy by Will Durst, and music by Dave Smallen and Amores Vigilantes! As always, the fun is $10 cheap, 21+, 7pm @ 3225 22nd Street.
Tuesday 6/15: Build your hipster cred and put all of your indie film snob friends to shame after seeing It Came From Kuchar at the Red Vic Movie House. The documentary follows the pre-YouTube rise of the Kuchar brothers, George and Mike, during the Warhol-era. Director, Jennifer Kroot, will be present on Tuesday as well as Mike Kuchar, who will present one of his shorts at the screening. Tickets only $7 every Tuesday with showings at 7:15 and 9:35pm @ 1727 Haight Street.
Wednesday 6/16: Battle the humpday blues with The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss at the Dennis Rae Fine Art Gallery (351 Geary Street). Then head down to the Coda Lounge for their weekly Wednesday Night Jazz Series which includes a prix fix dinner, wine, and jazz for only $35. Also on display at Coda right now, catch the low-brow/graffiti inspired work of local DJ and artist Romanowski. 7-10pm @ 1710 Mission Street.
Thursday 6/17: Join Goat Hall Productions and the San Francisco Cabaret Opera for the Fresh Voices X Festival of New Works. Catch Program A on Thursday and Saturday at 8pm featuring The Bloody Chamber, Elizabeth Isadora Gold and Daniel Felsenfeld’s adaptation of Angela Carter’s 1979 novella. Tickets $15-25, all ages, 8pm @ 1301 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley.
Friday 6/18: Shimmy down to DNA Lounge for comedy, burlesque, and live music at the Hubba Hubba Revue. Catch Hellish performances by the likes of Sparky Devil, Wiggy Darlington, Bunny Pistol, and Miss Mae Western! $10-15, 21+, 9pm @ 375 11th Street.
Saturday 6/19: Head down to the Hemlock Tavern and catch electronic music maker, Head Like a Kite play with Smoosh and Jonesin. Be sure to check out HLAK’s new full length album, “Dreams Suspend Night”, and the music video for “She’s Wearing That Costume”, which singer/songwriter, Dave Eimo sold to me as “starring a panda, superman, and voluptuousness” — surely a combination not to be missed. $7, 21+, 9:30pm @ 1131 Polk Street.
Sunday 6/20: Strap on your finest corrugated armor and join the San Francisco Cardboard Tube Fighting League for their first summer event at the Hayes Valley Farm (novice cardboard tube fighters, show up on Saturday afternoon as well for the cardboard armor building workshop)! This event is free and open to all 5+ year-olds who wish to join an elite militia of card board tube wielding ninjas, and cardboard tubes will be provided! 3-6pm @ 450 Laguna Street.
