Writing In The Buff

When Victor Hugo had writer’s block, “he had his servant take all of his clothes away for the day and leave his own nude self with only pen and paper, so he’d have nothing to do but sit down and write.”

VIDA pointed me in the direction of this list of writers who wrote naked, including Agatha Christie (bathtub), Ernest Hemingway (standing up with typewriter at waist level,) and D.H. Lawrence (naked in a mulberry tree.)

Seth Fischer

Seth Fischerâ€™s writing has twice been listed as notable in The Best American Essays and has been nominated for The Pushcart Prize by several publications, including Guernica. He was the founding Sunday editor at The Rumpus and is the current nonfiction editor at The Nervous Breakdown. He is a Dornsife PhD Fellow at USC and been awarded fellowships and residencies by Ucross, Lambda Literary, Jentel, Ragdale, and elsewhere, and he teaches at the UCLA-Extension Writerâ€™s Program and Antioch University, where he received his MFA.

Ben Franklin liked to sit naked in front of the window every morning for his “air bath”, whether or not he was writing. Also, Walter Mosely allegedly writes naked in a little apartment in New York. I only write naked if I just got out of the bath tub and I’m having a hot flash, not as a regular habit.
