Friday 9/15: Visit Women & Children First to celebrate the launch of local author Cheryl Reed’s new mystery thriller, Poison Girls. For this event, Cheryl will be joined by Jamie Freveletti, author of Dead Asleep. 7:30 p.m., free.

Sunday 9/17: Volumes Bookcafé hosts Falling for Gwendolyn Brooks. The celebration of the Brooks centennial continues with a special look at the fall section of SEASONS: A Gwendolyn Brooks Experience. 4:30 p.m., free.

Monday 9 /18: Essay Fiesta! is back at The Book Cellar for an evening of live lit. 7 p.m., donations to 826CHI encouraged.

Tuesday 9/19: The Open Door Reading Series at The Poetry Foundation continues with readings from Columbia College’s Lisa Fishman and her student Thomas Mowe along with Northwestern University’s Averill Curdy and her student Ashley Keyser. 7 p.m., free.

Wednesday 9/20: City Lit Books hosts its monthly Prose and Poetry and Potentially Other Things Open Mic Night! 6:30 p.m., free.

Thursday 9/21: The Book Cellar welcomes Tod Goldberg and Gina Frangello in conversation to celebrate Tod’s new book, Gangster Nation. 7 p.m., free.
